6134 Lance Corporal A Bainbridge, 1st Battalion the Northumberland Fusiliers. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing at the beginning of Oct 1899, and being early on the scene, were employed on garrison duty in Cape Colony till Lord Methuen commenced his advance from the Orange River. They joined the 9th Brigade with 2nd Northampton Regiment, 2nd Yorkshire Light Infantry, and part of the 1st Loyal North Lancashire and fought at the battles of Belmont, Enslin (Graspan) and Modder River. They had little involvement at Magersfontein and followed up the main advance to Pretoria under Lord Methuen, moving initially to Kimberley and being involved in endless skirmishes with the Boers over much of the Orange Free State. The battalion remained with Lord Methuen for much of the latter part of 1900 and early 1901, undertaking endless treks. Private Bainbridge died at the military hospital, Vryburg on 19 Aug 1902. He is also commemorated on the Newcastle upon Tyne Boer War memorial in the Haymarket, St Mary's Place, Northumberland Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/200052).
