He was best known to television viewers for his role as John Munch on both the popular television series "Homicide: Life on the Street" and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" from 1993 to 2016. After graduating from college, he worked at various jobs before going into stand-up comedy in the early 1970s. In 1974, he made his acting debut in the cult film "The Groove Tube." He later appeared in such films as "Fame," (1980) "Night Shift," (1982) "Scarface," (1983) "Fletch Lives," (1989) "A Very Brady Sequel," (1996) "Man on the Moon," (1999), and "Polish Bar." (2010) During the mid-1970s, he got his start in television on the hit show "Saturday Night Live," both with appearances and as an audience warm-up comedian. Besides "Homicide: Life on the Street' and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," his other television credits included such series as "Moonlighting," "The Flash," "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman," "The X-Files," "Law & Order," and "30 Rock." He also made appearances on the radio and authored several books during his career.
