Son of C D "Jim" Avant and Tula Butler Avant. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict on the same ship as his brother, Jimmy - the USS Black. After his service, he married Millie. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and served once as Commander. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of fifty years, Millie Jean Cosby Avant; daughter, Carla Avant Reeves; son Robert Neal "Bubba" Avant Jr.; grandchildren, Justin Reeves and Robert Bradley McDonald; great-granddaughter, Karli Kiersin Reeves; brother, Carl Avant; and sister, Polly DeWitt. Surviving are his daughters, Donna Avant Miller (Terry), Rhonda Avant McDonald (Larry) and Mary Jo Fox; brothers, Jimmy Avant (Jennie), and Don Avant (Karen); sister Peggy White; sister-in-law, Elaine Avant; fifteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.
