ROPER - At his home in Pierce, Nebraska, on December 23, 1898, of lung trouble, Fred, the beloved son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilder Julius Roper.

The death of Fred Roper falls with unusual sadness on the bereaved parents, in that he was their only son, their hope and life in future years. Though sick almost fifteen months and unable to speak in a whisper for four months, he was always cheerful and looking on the bright side of life, no complaint ever passing his lips, his great desire being to get well so he could repay his parents for their tender loving care. He was not afraid to die and when "his doctor", as he called Dr. Alden, told him he had not long to live he said to his mother "I am all right but I don't like to make you feel bad and who will take care of you when you get old?" He died knowing all who called that evening and was conscious until the last few minutes when he fell asleep to wake up to a better land.

Fred Roper was born July 6, 1882 in Prairie Farm, Barron County, Wisconsin, being 16 years 5 months 17 days old at the time of his death. He lived in Nebraska twelve years. A father, mother, sister, and a large circle of friends are left to mourn him.

"Our hearts are torn and grief and pain.
Oh! Fred, we cannot say goodbye,
Oh! may we soon meet you again.
And be united there on high."
