James Burton "Bert" Houpt was born in Sullivan Co., IN to John Wesley and Mary Jane Burton Houpt on Oct 12, 1880. On December 7, 1903, he married Nettie Alice Duncan Cooper. Together they had 2 sons, Carl A. & Harold H. They were divorced in 1908. "Bert" enlisted in the Army and served in the 11th Infantry, USA during Spanish American War. He returned to Indiana and remarried Nettie on April 8, 1911 and from this remarriage, J. William Houpt was born. They again divorced sometime between 1920 & 1926. On Oct 6, 1926 "Bert" married Mary Pha McAtee, daughter of Charles Byron and Phoebe Ann Davidson McAtee. From this marriage, he and Mary Pha had four daughters, Mary Anna, Emma Mae, Nila Lou and Lydia Belle. "Bert" was a coal miner in Greene County for several years then moved his family to Otwell to be close to his sister Emma Abbott sometime after 1935. He worked at the local Otwell grain mill. He died of a heart attack while getting the furnaces going at the mill on the morning of his death.
