Benjamin was a son of Thomas Thomason (1786-1857) & Sophia Wills (1791-1846). He, along with his brother Esmy Thomason (1816-1869) & their wives & families departed from London on the Emma Colvin, under the command of Captain Nicholsoon, on 9 March 1856, arriving in Nelson 23 June 1856.
Benjamin married Maria Gilkes in 1848 & had 4 children before emigrating. They had a further 8 children in Nelson.

Colonist, 24 Jan 1893 Another of Nelson's early settlers passed suddenly away last week in the person of Mr Benjamin Thomason, who had resided at Spring Grove for many years, where he made for himself a very comfortable home.
The Friends of the late Benjamin Thomason are respectfully informed that his funeral will leave his late residence, Spring Grove, to-morrow (Wednesday), the 18th inst., at 1 p.m. for St Paul's Church, Brightwater.
Maria died 5 years later on 26 May 1898
