Hall of Fame Professional Football Executive. He served as the general manager of both the National Football League's Washington Redskins and San Diego Chargers from 1978 to 2000. He played football collegiately at Cal Poly and later had two pre-season stints as a player in both the NFL and AFL. In the early 1960s, he joined the Kansas City Chiefs as a part-time scout. He went on to be a full-time scout for the team. From 1968 to 1971, he served as a scout for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons. In 1972, he joined the Miami Dolphins as director of player personnel and was a part of their Super Bowl-winning teams in both 1972 and 1973. In 1978, he was named the general manager of the Washington Redskins and was instrumental in building their two Super Bowl-winning and three NFC Championship-winning teams. He left the Redskins in 1988 and a year later, joined NBC as a studio analyst on its NFL on NBC show. In 1990, he became the San Diego Chargers general manager and helped guide the team to its first Super Bowl appearance in 1994. He retired in 2000. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018.
