The son of John and Ann L. (Giles) Pursell, also spelled Purcell, who were born in England and married there in 1854. The couple immigrated to the United States and settled in East Boston. John Pursell, the father, was a Carver who worked in the Gothic Revival style.

The family was residing at 43 Havre St. in East Boston when John, then four years and eight months old, died of Dysentery and Hydrocephalus. His burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett, MA.
