BOULCOTT - On the 15th February, at his late residence, Taitai, Almon Boulcott, aged 64 years
Almon was born at Stratford House, Stratford, West Ham, Essex to John Ellerker Boulcott (1785-1855), a financier of the New Zealand Company (among other things) & of Mary Hill (1786-1858). Almon and his brother Joseph (1809-1849) arrived in NZ 8 Feb 1842 on the 'Mary Ann".
In the 1847 Port Nicholson Jurors Lists, Joseph is listed as a merchant and Almon as a settler, both of Te Aro Flat. By 1848 Almon had moved out to the River Hutt and became an early settler/farmer of the area. His father had bought the land but never came out to NZ. In fact, when he died in 1858, all his unseen land in NZ was valued at £26,000 ($2,550,00 in 2008)
In 1846 a skirmish with local Maori occurred on Almon's farm in the River Hutt valley. A stockade was built and it has become 'famous' down through history, as the "Battle of Boulcott Farm"
Almon married Eliza Lavinia Hopton in 1856 and they had a total of 11 children.
A large memorial stands on the corner of High Street and Military Road in eastern Boulcott. It commemorates 8 British soldiers of the 58th and 99th regiments who were killed in action or died of wounds received during a Ngāti Hāua-te-rangi raid on the military post at Almon's Farm on 16 May 1846. The memorial does not stand on the site at Boulcott's Farm because of the frequent floods which change the course of the Hutt River and the contour of the farm
