Sarah was a daughter of Robert Hopton (1809-1854) & Charlotte Fagan/Fagen (1812-1875) of Cheltenham. She arrived on the 'Lord William Bentinck' 19 May 1841 with her parents and 4 siblings. However, her 2 year old brother Robert and baby sister Susan died shortly after arriving. Her older sister Mary Emma married in 1854 but died 3 months later. The following month her father Robert died of a fractured skull in the Hutt from an accidental blow to the head. He was 45. Her mum remarried the following year to widower William Thomas. One of William's sons, Michael Thomas named one of his sons, Robert Hopton Thomas. Michael and Robert are buried in Greytown
