Alfred went missing in the Wairarapa bush around 1889.
It is believed that it was his remains that were found almost 10 years later

Wairarapa Daily Times, 19 April 1899
Constable Gray received information last evening from Mr Stonewig, of Mangaone Valley, that a skeleton had been found on his property. The constable went out this morning to get the remains and make inquiries into the affair. Some years ago a man named William Clements, who had been drinking heavily in Eketahuna, left to proceed to Pahiatua via Mangaone and was not heard of again. Search parties were organised at the time, but failed to find the slightest trace of the man. In all probability he was lost in the bush and the finding of the bones in question may throw some light upon his fate.

NZ Herald, 100 Years Ago, 23 Apr 1999
Portions of human remains were found at Tane, near Eketahuna. They are believed to be those of William Clements, who some years ago, after a drinking bout, left for Pahiatua, and was never heard of again.
