"We regret to chronicle the loss of Gideon J. Pillow, Jr., the son of Gen. Pillow, of Tennessee. Young Mr. Pillow embarked on the St. Nicholas at this port, on Sunday evening, for his father's plantation, near Helena; and as there is no account of his escape, there can be but little doubt that his life was lost in the general disaster." — The Des Arc Weekly Citizen • 29 Apr 1859.

"No tidings have been received of the body of Gideon J. Pillow, Jr." — The Des Arc Weekly Citizen • 18 May 1859.

The boilers of the steamer St. Nicholas exploded at half past ten o'clock at night on Sunday, April 24, at Island 60 on the Mississippi River, and the boat burned to the water's edge immediately afterward. By the accident between fifty and sixty lives were lost, and the boat and cargo were totally destroyed. — The Des Arc Weekly Citizen • 29 Apr 1859; and The Arkansian • 14 May 1859.
