John married Jane Thomas in 1825, when he was 20 and she was 16. They had 5 children, the last one "Bob" in Feb 1837. Jane died around June of 1838 when Bob was 16 months old.

John next married Caroline Wadman 9 months later and they had William b.Dec.1839 - making him 18 months old when they departed for New Zealand on the "ARAB" on 1 June 1841 (The ships records have William as 9 months).
The ship lost its topmasts in the Channel and it had to put back to Dartmouth, not departing again until the 15th June. The ship left Gravesend with 208 passengers bound for NZ, arriving 4 months later on the 16 Oct 1841,
With John was his new wife Caroline, who was pregnant with their 2nd child - that child, Elizabeth, was born at sea but died as an infant on the voyage. Also with him was ..

They settled in Te Marua ( 40km ne of Wellington) and is now considered a suburb of Upper Hutt.

John's 1st child was born in 1826 when he was 21 . After 2 wives his last child was born in 1859 when he was 54. A total of 18 children over 33 years.
