James McPhail, born 22 April 1791, came from the parish of Ardclach, Nairnshire, Scotland. He married Janet McIntosh at Cawdor, Nairnshire, Scotland in 1815. Janet was born 1789 in Inverness-shire, Scotland.
Three years later, they emigrated to America landing near Charleston, South Carolina, USA where they remained for 6 months before moving to Catskill, Delaware Co. New York State and after 6-8 years they moved to the Genesee Valley to Caledonia, New York.
In 1828 they moved to North Dumfries Township in Waterloo County, Ontario. They lived in a log house two miles from Galt, on the East River Road.
James died 3 March 1856 at North Dumfries Twp., Waterloo, Ontario, Canada and was originally buried at St. Andrew's cemetery. In 1869 he was moved to Mount View Cemetery in Cambridge, Waterloo Regional Municipality, Ontario, Canada (Sect 2 24W-18-1) The inscription on his grave marker reads: "In memory of James McPhail a native of Arclauch Nairnshire Scotland d 3 MAR 1856 65 yrs His wife Janet McIntosh a native of Inverness-shire Scotland d 9 SEP 1874 aged 86 yrs 4 mos.
