Harned in the Vol Layman Cemetery near Millwood, Grayson County, Kentucky. His widow Amanda joined him there after her death on May 31, 1929 at the age of 86 years, 3 months and 5 days. Also buried there are daughter Sissy Ann and son James Oscar and James' wife Ada Eleanor Nugent Harned.
