Mary Thomas Haile was the daughter of James Thomas Haile and Mary Beaver Hodges. She was their fourth child and the first girl in the family. She married William Payton Sampson on July 17, 1892, in Throckmorton Co., TX.

Her husband was a constable, and Mary Thomas cooked for the prisoners. He used road teams to help build roads. He was also a farmer. They lived in Throckmorton Co, TX, Dickens Co,TX, Tye (near Abilene, TX), and Roaring Springs (Motley Co,TX).
