Sonoma resident, British Air Force Asian Theatre World War II veteran, display manager Evered (Ted) Charles Sackley, died Feb. 5, 2008.
Ted was born April 8, 1924 and grew up in London near Paddington Station. The bombing of London impressed Ted that you never know when the end might come.
As a British Air Force enlisted man, he traveled by crowded troop ship to India, served in Malaysia and was part of the occupation of Japan. His unit was the first to be a wearer of berets.
He developed a love of Japan and would have moved there but for his choice to join his aunt in Southern California. He flew by Pan AM Clipper to New York and continued by rail to San Diego.
Ted met his partner of 48 years, John "Warren" Hayes, in the Los Angeles area and the two of them lived together in San Francisco, Mill Valley, Mendocino and Sonoma.
Ted was an artistic and skilled decorator and gardener as his work as a department head at San Francisco stores and his numerous homes reflected. He was an affable Sonoma Plaza people watcher and conversationalist. He wandered and enjoyed California from mountains to shore. Above all he valued love, "the only thing you take with you," and surely now, several years after Warren's death, is pleased to be resting his soul with his partner and love of his life.
Ted was an art collector, a congenial gentleman and master of life.
