SATANTA - Leroy Hayden, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend died Friday, February 22, 2008, at the Satanta District Hospital, Satanta, Kansas.

The son of Austin Joseph and Goldie Irene (Schonlaw) Hayden, Leroy was born July 31, 1927, in Satanta, Kansas, where he was a lifetime resident. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, worked for the United Carbon Company in Ryus, owned and operated Hayden Clothiers of Satanta, Sublette, Johnson and Hugoton, and served as a State Senator of the 39th District for sixteen years. Leroy attended the First Baptist Church of Satanta, was a member of the Satanta American Legion Post No. 276, was a life member of the V.F.W., and was past member of the Satanta Chamber of Commerce. In 2007, he received the Senior Citizen of the Year Award.

Leroy and Mavis Gray Barker were married April 18, 1958. Together they raised a family of six children.

Survivors include: his wife, Mavis Hayden, Satanta, KS; four sons, Steve Barker and wife Jody of Satanta, KS, Gary Barker and wife Mary of Hugoton, KS, Michael Hayden and Jeanne of Chicago, IL, Shawn Hayden and wife, Blanche of Satanta, KS; two daughters, Marsha Flummerfelt of Ulysses, KS, Robyn Young and husband Cass of Wichita, KS; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.

Leroy was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Genevieve Duck and Maxine Hayden, and a great-granddaughter, Erin Anton.

Many will remember Leroy as an enthusiastic sports official who refereed basketball and football games throughout the area for many years. He had a zeal for live, never met a stranger, and gave generously and kindly to family, friends and the community.

A memorial has been established for the Satanta Long Term Care Unit, Satanta, KS. Memorials may be left at the Shopping Stop True Value, Satanta, or mailed to Haskell County Funeral Home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday February 26, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Satanta, KS with Ministers, Randy Dirrum and Ray Tweed presiding. Military Graveside Services will be conducted by the Satanta American Legion Post No. 276, at the Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta, KS.

Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette, is in charge of arrangements. Friends may call Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
