Born in Irwin, Gunnison County, Colorado, Bessie was the oldest of 13 children born to Thomas R. and Sarah Marilla Shaw Owens. She was not given a middle name at birth, and didn't like that, so she added Helen as her middle name. She became a school teacher at the Paragon School, and boarded in the house of Mrs. Phoeba Walker. She fell in love with Phoeba's oldest son, John Albert Walker. They married December 30, 1911, and became the parents of nine children. For most of their married life Bessie and John lived in Ft. Lupton. They had 37 grandchildren.
