One of the first Highland chiefs to become Protestant, for which he was called the "Renouncer of the Mass." His death is recorded in the Chronicle of Fortingall, thus:

"Obiit Allexander Menzes de eodein apud Perth et sepultus abidem septimo die Mertii anno Domini MV sexta tre yeris. Abreiiuntianit nissani et sacramentum altaris."
Translation :
"7th March 1563. Alexander Menzies of that Ilk died at Perth, and was buried away at "Weem," on the 7th day of March 1563. He RENOUNCED the Mass AND Sacrament of the Altar."
