Richard Lorenza Avant Sr.
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Lorenza Avant Sr. at his home in Townsend, Georgia, on January 10th, 2023.
His contribution to the world was his children Rick, Joy, Ricky, and Michelle, along with a number of Grandchildren and Great grandchildren. He also leaves behind a large number of nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and cousins. He will be fondly remembered by his special friends, Jan, Ron, Patricia, Sheila, Claude, Tony, Duane, and Karen. His beloved Cat, Jake, will miss his love, warmth, and companionship.
Richard was born on August 24th, 1942 in Elizabeth City, Virginia. He was predeceased by his parents Walker Avant and Lucca Sansbury Avant Morgan , His siblings Margaret Avant Dyson, Ruby Avant Vassar, Juanita Avant Bradley, W.L. Avant Jr., Sandra Avant McElhenie, Sue Avant Coughenour, and William M. Avant.
Richard served as a diver in the Navy during Viet Nam. He started his own diving business, which had him traveling to many parts of the world. He loved everything about the water, and loved being in the Navy. He was knowledgeable on just about every subject, and would spend hours telling stories about his life. His friends describe him as "A likeable ol' sailor" who had a smile for all of them and who took great pride in riding around his Park community to watch out for his neighbors.
A service of remembrance will be held at a later date, near his home in Townsend, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that you write letters to Military Veterans through Operation Gratitude, at OperationGratitude.com
