Elvin was the son of Tony G. Sofie and Fannie Harrington. His paternal grandparents were George Sofie and Christina Scaringi. Elvin's maternal grandparents were John D. Harrington and Emmogene Hake. Elvin married Marcia Schlemmer.

The following letter was written by a friend of Elvin and Elvin's brother in law, Don Schlemmer at the time of Don's passing in 2012.
"I was very sad too hear of Bear's passing I remember back to 1959 like it was yesterday. Bear just got out of the Air Force and I out of the Army we both got jobs at Crown Zellerbach. I picked Bear up and we were on our way to the American Legion Hall driving down Lincoln street, the Bear wanted to start a team we both put up $150.00 and sponcered ourselves. The name Comets came from a Meteor that went across the sky on one of our trips to the Legion, the first year we had a hard time winning the next year we found Elvin Sofie who just got out of the Air Force and we won it all and went to our first State Tourney. That was the start I went off to try out for Pro Baseball and the Bear and Sofie stayed in P.A. and the rest is history. As I think back I can say Bear went as far as he could go with the tools he was given and the rest of us are all enjoying his efforts and he never wanted anything in return. Now if he could find a good pitcher with speed and a good rise ball and a good drop he might reconsider. May you rest in peace my good friend and my deepest condolences to Betty and the kids"

"PORT ANGELES — When the Lefties take on the Bellingham Bells this weekend, it will mark the first time former Peninsula College pitcher Jim Clem will be back at Civic Field since he played for the Pirates from 1972-74. Clem is now the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for the Bells, a position he has held since retiring in 2011 as athletic director and coach at Burlington-Edison High School after 28 years at that school. During his coaching tenure at Burlington-Edison, his teams won 12 conference titles and appeared in 15 state tournaments.

Clem and other former Pirates arranged for Elvin Sofie to throw out the first pitch for the first Bells/Lefties game tonight. Sofie was an assistant coach for the Pirates during Clem's two years in Port Angeles. He was also an advance scout for the Pirates' basketball team for Coach Jack Estes from 1967-1973.

Clem credits Sofie and Estes for providing the coaching foundation that has helped throughout his career. After the baseball program at Peninsula College was discontinued, Sofie was an unpaid assistant coach for the Pirate fastpitch team for years. More recently, he also volunteered his time with the Sequim girls fastpitch team for a number of years, including their undefeated season in 2011. A former basketball and baseball star at Sequim High School, Sofie, who turned 80 in February, continues to donate his time to help develop young pitchers."

"We are saddened today to learn of the passing of former Peninsula College softball and baseball coach, Elvin Sofie. Coach Sofie was around a ball park most of his life, including the early 1970s when Peninsula College had a baseball team and again from 2000-2010 when he help with our Pirate softball team. He was hard working and a bit gruff on the outside, but had the biggest heart, loved the game, and loved being part of it. Not sure whether he took a dime for his efforts. Port Angeles lost a wealth of sports history with Elvin's passing. He knew the names and stats of hundreds, maybe thousands of athletes and was happy to share the stories with anyone fortunate enough to sit by him in a game. We will miss you Coach Sofie. Rest in Peace."
