Mrs. Robert Smith
The companionship in this physical world of a husband and wife who had lived together for nearly sixty-four years was brought to a close by the death at 9 a.m. Monday, July 23, 1956, of Mrs. Robert M. Smith, 81, Capron, at the Harvard Community hospital. Mrs. Smith had been in frail health for some years. That she lived as long as she did was due in part to the devoted care her husband gave her.
Sarah Jane Dowey was born in County Armagh, Ireland, the daughter of Robert and Sarah Dowey. She and Mr. Smith were married while still very young, on Sept. 21, 1892, at Walworth.
Mrs. Smith's father came to America first, then was followed by Mrs. Smith and another daughter. Last of all came the mother and the remaining children.
The couple farmed for a time in LeRoy township, lived in Harvard for a few years, returned to the farm Mr. Smith still owns east of Blaine, and then retired and located in Capron in 1937.
Surviving Mrs. Smith are her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Lawrence C. Goodall, R. 2, and Mrs. Fred Lambert, Capron; two sons, Roy, Capron, and Robert D., Elgin; ten grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Carl Fredericks, Harvard, and Mrs. Roy Burton.
The funeral was held Wednseday in the Capron Methodist church, with the pastor, Rev. Ralph Totten, officiating. Mrs. Bartel Olson and Mrs. Ralph Totten sang two songs together, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere, " and "In the garden". Bearers were Fayette and Robert Lambert, Eugene and Roy Smith, Jr., Harold Davis and James Ulrich. Burial was in the Capron Cemetery.
