Major League Baseball Player. For twelve seasons (1956 to 1967), he was a pitcher with the Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants, California Angels and Kansas City Athletics. Born John Stanley Sanford, he was signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent in 1948 and marked his Major League debut on September 16th, 1956, recording 1 win in 3 games pitched. Sanford would flourish in 1957, as he posted 19 wins, while leading the league in strikeouts with 188, as he earned All-Star status and National League Rookie of the Year honors. He produced a career-high 24 wins with San Francisco in 1962, and was a key contributor on their squad which clinched the National League Pennant that season. He appeared in 3 games, compiling a 1 win 2 loss record, while recording 19 strikeouts in 23 innings pitched during the 1962 World Series. In 388 career regular season games, he amassed a 137 win 101 loss record, while pitching in 2,049 innings; he posted a 3.69 lifetime ERA. Following his playing career, he served as a coach for two years with the Cleveland Indians (1968 to 1969) and later was the golf director at a country club. He died of cancer.
