STRATFIELDSAYE.
FUNERAL OF LADY CHARLES WELLESLEY AT STRATFIELDSAYE.
The funeral of Lady Charles Wellesley, who died at Conholt-park, Andover, on July 13th (as stated in last week's Mercury), took place on Monday last, the body being laid the family vault at Stratfieldsaye. The deep respect and affectionate regard in which the deceased lady was held was shown by the large number of persons who assembled round the grave. At Stratfieldsaye House the procession was formed and was joined by the servants and workpeople of Stratfieldsaye and Conholt. After the service a large number of wreaths were placed round the entrance to the vault. All were most beautiful, conspicuous among them being those sent by the Duchess of Wellington, Elizabeth Duchess Wellington, and the servants of Apsley House and Stratfieldsaye. The mourners were:—The Duke and Duchess of Wellington, Lord Arthur Charles and Lady Wellesley, Misses Wellesley, Mr. Arthur Charles Wellesley, Mr. Richard Wellesley, Mr. lon Hamilton and Lady Victoria Hamilton, Mr. Arthur Scott and Lady Mary Scott, Miss Scroggs, Lord Wm. Cecil, Col. Corkran, Mr. C. Williams-Wynn, Mr. C. Egerton, Mr. C. Bentinck, Mr. W. Fowle, the Revs. W. H. Audrey, H. Delmer Ratcliffe, and L. Ridley, and Dr. Freeman.
The servants on both estates were present, and also the mechanics and labourers.
Lady Charles Wellesley was the daughter of the Right Hon. Henry Manvers Pierrepoint, third son of the first Earl Manvers. She was born May 30lb, 1820, and on July 9th, 1844, she was married to Lord Charles Wellesley, the second son of the great Duke of Wellington. Of her children, Arthur died infancy; Henry is the third and present Duke of Wellington, Arthur Charles is Colonel of the Grenadier Guards. Lord Charles Wellesley died in 1858, and lies in the same vault in which the remains of his widow are now deposited. [Reading Mercury - Saturday 22 July 1893, p.5]
