Helga Evjen, age 88, of Canby, passed away Sunday, February 17, 2008 at the Sanford Canby Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 11:00 am at Bethel Lutheran Church in Porter. Visitation will be held on Monday from 5-8 pm at Birk Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior at the church on Tuesday. The Reverend Ellen Munter will officiate. Burial will be in Wergeland Cemetery. Memorials preferred to Mount Carmel Ministries, PO Box 579, Alexandria, MN 56308 or donor's choice.

She was born on December 25, 1919 in Cumberland, WI, the daughter of Anton & Amanda (Johnson) Carlson. She graduated from Cumberland High School and received her teaching degree from Barron County Normal in Rice Lake, WI. She taught school in Clear Lake, WI, Poulsbo, WA and many Wisconsin country schools.

She married Palmer Evjen on June 30, 1951 in Cumberland, WI. After their marriage, they moved to the Porter area, which is where they farmed. The couple raised their family on the farm in Wergeland Township. Following their retirement from farming, they moved to a house in Canby. Her hobbies were gardening and being a farmwife. She liked to handwork, going south to Arizona for the winter, and volunteering where ever she was needed. Spending time with her family meant everything to her.

Survivors include her son, Paul (Lori) Evjen of Jamestown, ND; 8 grandchildren; many great grandchildren, nieces & nephews; two sisters, Ellie Nordby of Barron, WI and Linnea Moberg of Coon Rapids, MN. She was preceded by her parents; twin brother, Harry; sisters, Ruth Tengbom & Evelyn Carlson; son, Donald Evjen & an infant son.
