Upon graduation from high school, he was inducted into the United States Army and served his country during World War II. After receiving an honorable discharge , he graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. John began his career in Morristown as an Agricultural teacher then later owned and operated the R C Cola business for several years. John was a real estate broker during the final phase of his career. John and several other realtors started United Realty of Morristown.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 30 years, Dorothy Estep Clawson; his parents, Garfield Clawson and Eva Rogers Clawson; sisters, Muriel Sharp, Cecil Goins, Sara Bett Brown and Bonnie Russell; brothers, Ralph Clawson and George Clawson; brother-in-law, James Estep, Jr.; sister-in-laws, Ann Howard Estep, Elizabeth G. Estep and Diane Ruth.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Brenda Knight Clawson; children, John Estep Clawson and wife Nancy Carol Clawson, James Rogers Clawson and wife Carolyn Holt Clawson, Suzanne Clawson Poole and husband Barry G. Poole; Step children, Russ Knight and wife Vicki Knight, Dr. Daniel Knight and Caroline Knight; Grandchildren, James Rogers Clawson, Jr. and wife Emily Clawson, John Daniel Clawson, Stephen Estep Clawson and wife Lindsey Clawson, Dr. Ashlee Poole Lynch and husband Paul Lynch, Leslie Poole Lynch and husband Dr. Zac Lynch; Step grandchildren Hailey Knight Bales and husband Chris Bales, Brandon Knight and Abbi Knight; Great grandchildren Anderson Lynch, Colson Lynch, Archie Lynch, Emery Ann Lynch, Tate Clawson and Beau Clawson; Brother –in- law Carroll Ruth and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at their convenience at Mayes Mortuary. The funeral service will be conducted by the Reverend Danny Georges and the Reverend James D. Estep, IV on December 17, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Mayes Mortuary in Morristown, TN. Burial will be in the Harrogate(Meador) Cemetery in Harrogate, TN on December 17, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Morristown, TN.
