Clifford E. Wilson, retired police lieutenant

Clifford E. Wilson was known for his fairness as a police lieutenant and father.

"He got involved with police work because he was a public service type of person," said daughter Karen Long of Bromley. "The people he arrested thought he was fair. They never said anything bad about him."

Mr. Wilson, of Ludlow, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was 79.

"He gave us a really good set of values," said Long. He was a strict father, making sure his children grew up knowing what was right and wrong. "But he gave us leeway to make mistakes."

"He always had little sayings: 'If it's not yours, don't touch it.' 'If you want something, ask. The worst they can say is no.'"

A burly man and a hunter, he took his took his daughters shopping for Easter dresses one year.

"Mom was in the hospital, and he took us shopping by himself. He took three little girls down to Robert Hall in Covington to get our Easter dresses," said Long.

"One Christmas, transistor radios just came out. Raising three girls, money was tight. Dad pawned his gun, so we could each have our own radio."

Mr. Wilson was an Air Force veteran. Too young to enlist for World War II, he joined the military soon after he turned 18. "His brother George was killed in a tank (during the war)," said Long. "His death inspired him (to enlist)."

His wife, Celestine Wilson, died in 2003.

"Dad didn't get out much during the last three years of her life, out of respect for her," said Long. Mr. Wilson took care of his ailing wife while she had Alzheimer's. "The grandchildren would always drop by and see him though."

Additional survivors include daughters, Dara Ann Wilson and Connie Wallace; stepsons, Thomas Schrage, David Schrage, Robert Schrage, and Ralph Wright; stepdaughters, Janet Bush and Sherry Holtkamp; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
