~Marriage:
Mary E. Rankins 25 Dec 1898 Attleboro, MAWilliam Elmer Tillinghast was the son of Merritt L. and Mary Jane (Parker) Tillinghast. William had one sibling, Stephen, who died as an infant (May 21, 1871) in Sterling, Windham, Connecticut. He married Mary Eliza Rankin on Christmas day - December 25, 1898 at Attleboro, Bristol, Massachusetts.

William and Mary had the following children: Ralph Howard, Earl Parker, Phoebe Alice (Tillinghast) Donnelly (my grandmother), Lillian Elsbree (Tillinghst) Giroux, Carolyn Mary (Tillinghast) LeClair, Raymond E., Florence (Tillinghast) Smith, John Charles Washington, and William Elmer Tillinghast Jr.

William spent his boyhood growing up in West Greenwich, Kent, Rhode Island. At that time (1875-1890), the town of West Greenwich was mostly rural and farm land. The first year this author has William living in Providence, RI is in 1898. This according to his marriage record.

William spent most of his adult life living in Providence, he worked as a truck driver and was a member of the Teamster's.

When William died in 1927 he was just 52 years old. His wife Mary was left to raise their seven young children.

William died at home, 84 Borden Street, surrounded by his wife, children and other family members.

His daughter, Phoebe Alice, who is my grandmother said, "It was a sad day, us kids were all crying, and I was heart broken." She remembered her father as a good man.

It should be noted that William's "Return of a Death" states that his birth day was February 27, 1875. The month of February - it should have read May. So, William was born May 27, 1875.
