Died, at the residence of his son-in-law, Judge Robert L. McGuire, No. 517 South Seventh street, of heart failure, at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, 1895, Wilson Leaverton, aged 72 years. Mr. Leaverton's death was very sudden and was quite a shock to his many staunch friends as well as to his family. In company with his wife he had been attending the bedside of his son, Samuel Leaverton, who suffered a stroke of paralysis three weeks ago. He returned to this city only a few days since for a much needed rest and went to the home of his daughter, Mrs. McGuire. Before the physician arrived, the soul had passed to the great unknown. While he had not been feeling well, Mr. Leaverton had not been ill and had no intimation that the end was so near.
He was born in Ohio in 1823 (see below), and moved to Indianapolis, Ind., with his parents while yet a boy. In 1838 he moved to Bond county, Illinois, and from there to Chatham in 1873. Here he purchased a large farm and remained until a few years ago, when he retired and moved to this city, leaving the farm in charge of his sons. He served a short service in the late war and was a member of Stephenson post No. 30, G.A.R.
He leaves to mourn his loss besides his widow, two daughters, Mrs. R. L. McGuire, of this city, and Mrs. B. C. Richie, of Georgetown, Ill., and two sons, Richard S. and Samuel J. Leaverton, both of Chatham. Mrs. Richie arrived in the city last evening to attend the funeral, while his son, Richard Leaverton, will arrive this morning, accompanied by his wife. Samuel Leaverton will not be able to be in attendance at the funeral and neither will his wife, as she is quite ill with an attack of typhoid fever. Mr. Samuel Leaverton's recovery from the paralytic stroke is even doubtful. The deceased always resided at No. 1039 South Fourth street while living in this city.
The funeral will occur tomorrow from the residence of Judge McGuire. IL State Register, Springfield, IL, 9-13-1895
