OBITUARY:
THE REV. F. T. ROYAL GOES TO REWARD.
VETERAN MINISTER WHO LIVED MANY YEARS IN SALEM DIES IN PORTLAND.
Portland, March 7 --- Rev. Thomas Fletcher Royal, who had been engaged in the ministry longer than any other clergyman in the northwest, died this morning in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harold Oberg, at 36 East Thirtieth street, at the age of 90 years. He was connected with the Oregon conference of the Methodist church and was one of the most widely known preachers in this state. For many years he was an itinerant preacher and rode circuits in various parts of the state. He was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1821, entered the ministry as a member of the Rock Island conference of the Methodist church in Illinois in 1846 and was transferred to Oregon in 1853. His first charge in this state was the Jacksonville circuit, comprising a number of posts for preaching. He built the first Methodist church in southern Oregon in Jacksonville. Since that time he had filled various pulpits and had been greatly interested in educational work, having been principal of the Umpqua academy. He also served one term as county superintendent of schools in Jacksonville county. For three years he was a missionary on the Siletz Indian reservation and one year worked among the Indians of the Klamath reservation. His last appointment was in Leslie church, Salem. After he was made a superannuate preacher he preached regularly at the state penitentiary and the state hospital for the insane. His wife, to whom he was married in 1849, died in 1906, since which time he had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Harold Oberg, of this city. There were eight children in the family, four of whom are still living. Those who survive him are Mrs. Ober, of this city, Rev. S. O. Royal, of Cincinnati, F. W. Royal of Ballston, Or., and Mrs. Carrie L. Mumford of Vancouver, Wash. He is also survived by one brother, J. L. Royal, and a sister, Mrs. John Flinn of this city. During the last years of his life he prepared a history of pioneer life in Illinois and Oregon and this book is now ready for the press. Arrangements for the funeral have not been made.
