Sietske Sophia Howard 1924 ~ 2008
Sietske Sophia Howard, born December 22, 1924 in Utrecht, Netherlands to Martinez and Sietske Ket Emo ended her time on this earth and entered a new existence with her Heavenly Father, free of worry and pain. She passed away in Salt Lake City, Utah, surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, January 16, 2008, just eight days after her husband's passing. Sietske Sophia was a grand lady in a petite package; with a keen sense of design and elegance, she had a talent for creating beauty all around her. Her courage throughout her life inspired all who knew her. Being a young teenager in the Netherlands during World War II, she witnessed the beginning of the occupation firsthand when German soldiers parachuted down from the sky. She, her parents, and her five sisters experienced day-to-day trials and adventures during World War II, which were worthy of a box office hit. Later in life, her friends and family deeply enjoyed learning of this important part of history through the eyes of an impressionable, yet very independent young girl. That independence and courage came into play again when she followed her mother and sisters to the United States after the war. Inspired by the LDS church to travel to Salt Lake City, she was sponsored by the Muir family, and traveled the long route by ship, then bus, where she was terrified by her first glimpse of mountains. Meeting her husband, Robert Morgan Howard in Salt Lake City, she married in 1952. Together they raised four children; a son, Jerry; and daughters, Jean, Janet, and Shirley. Sietske Sophia showed remarkable drive and perseverance throughout her life, whether that was learning a new culture and language well enough to work in retail, or keeping up her beautiful appearance throughout health complications from her successful fight against cancer. Although throughout her later years, when pain became her constant companion, her sense of fun and adventure was always a driving force, with her enjoying many family trips to Chicago, San Francisco, Mexico, and Europe, especially her three return trips to Utrecht, Netherlands. Sietske Sophia loved taking her young children for visits to her sisters in Long Beach, CA, and to Las Vegas, NV, where she actively participated in the Emo sisters' passion for shopping. Her active imagination and creativity were gifts she handed down to her children, her nine grandchildren, and her 27 great-grandchildren, whom she mesmerized with vivid stories of Holland, the war, her passage to the States, along with darling Dutch childhood songs. She is survived by her children and her four sisters. She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her older sister, Alida Emo Dirkmaat. With an open-minded attitude and empathy for others, Sietske Sophia taught us all by example to avoid prejudice and to consider other's feelings. With her fine skill at crocheting, she was able to create beautiful scarves and garments that she gave to all around her. A deep belief in the LDS church not only became a guiding force for her, but also greatly impacted the lives of her offspring. Being a Primary teacher allowed her to spend time with children, which were the light of her life, as demonstrated when her face lit up at just the sight of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Being organized and incredibly driven to accomplish something every day, her determination added to her beauty, which drew attention everywhere she went. Her love and commitment to family through trials and illnesses, her child-like sense of wonder and joy of life, and her deep testimony and commitment to her religious beliefs has profoundly touched all of our lives. We will always love and cherish this grand little lady, this precious woman, Sietske Sophia Howard. Services are being held 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 21st, at the Midvalley 11th Ward, 1050 E. Chapel Hill Dr (aprrox. 7400 South), Midvale, UT. A viewing will be held at 11:30 the same day, same location. Interment is at the Redwood Memorial Park, 6500 S. Redwood Rd., West Jordan, 801-969-3456. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to all who have helped and shown care for our mother, especially CareSource Hospice.
