Lena Estelle Adkins, 88, formerly of Martinsville and Fieldale, died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at Prince William Hospital in Manassas.

She was born in the town of Francisco in Stokes County, N.C., to Walter Ambrose Leake and Ruth Allie Jessup Leake, both deceased. She was the wife of the late Wendell L. Adkins Sr., a homebuilder. The couple lived in Martinsville and Fieldale for a number of years before moving to the Marlan Forest area of Alexandria, where she lived for more than 50 years. She was active in several bridge clubs and was a member of the Marlan Forest Garden Club, serving as its president during 1965-66.

Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Adkins Guthrie of Manassas; two sons, Wendell L. Adkins Jr. of Alexandria and Walter E. Adkins of Haymarket; three sisters, Annie L. Harris of Martinsville, Edith Cheney of Springfield and Grace Erva Switzer of Dunn Loring; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Fieldale Baptist Church at noon Thursday. A service will be held at 1 p.m. and burial will follow in Roselawn Burial Park.
