James Verlin Peck
January 30, 1947 - November 9, 2022

James Verlin Peck, 75, of La Grande, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 9, 2022 in his home surrounded by family.

A service will be held on Wednesday, November 16 at 1:00 PM at Loveland Funeral Chapel in La Grande. Burial will follow the service at Cove Cemetery, with Johnny Moore dedicating the grave.

Jim was born January 30, 1947, in Dallas, Oregon. He was the oldest child of the late Charles W. and Luana E. Thompson Peck of La Grande.

After a few years in Baker City, the Peck family returned to La Grande in the mid-1950s, where Jim would live the rest of his life. He attended Greenwood Elementary, La Grande Middle School and La Grande High School.

Jim was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He served in the army from August 1966-August 1967 as a Recovery and Evacuation Specialist and truck mechanic, and from August 1967-August 1972 in the Reserves. For his service he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, Expert (Rifle M-14), and a Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Jim married Linda Thompson on January 11, 1969 in La Grande. Jim and Linda have two children, Dustin and Stacy, and four grandchildren. Jim was employed by Commercial Tire, Boise Cascade, Eagle Truck and Myrmo & Sons. He enjoyed driving trucks of all sizes and made friends wherever he went.

In 2009, Jim received the "For Support and Assistance on the Oregon Trail Sesquicentennial Wagon Train" award. He thoroughly enjoyed his three months traveling in support of the wagon train, making lifelong friends.

Jim was a member of the American Legion La Grande and a past-member of the 4-wheeling club "Forest Rovers." He enjoyed knife making, leatherwork, hunting, camping, riding motorcycles, 4-wheeling, softball (in his younger years), and chasing grandkids who called him "Papa" (he was a mean whiffle-ball pitcher). He loved to drive through the mountains looking at deer and elk. Once you got past his intimidating presence, he was actually tenderhearted; he loved caring for and serving others. He will be missed by his family and friends who loved him.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents Charles W. and Luana Thompson Peck. He is survived by his wife, Linda A. Thompson Peck, his two children and daughter and son-in-law: Dustin & Patti Steele Peck of Newberg, Oregon, and Tom & Stacy Peck Norton of Madras, Oregon, four grandchildren: Braeden Peck, Mylaena, Tommy and Alessandra Norton; siblings: Dennis G. & Carolyn Peck of Dallas, Oregon, and Kevin & Tanja Peck Crouch of Nashville, Tennessee.~~Loveland Funeral Home obituary
