Luana Elizabeth Peck, 96 of La Grande, passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2016 surrounded by family. A service will be held at 3:00pm on Thursday, May 26, at the Island City Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Bishop Russell Lester presiding and Bishop Chris Panike conducting. Dedication of the grave and vault interment will follow at the Cove Cemetery.

Luana was born January 3, 1920, in Union, Oregon to James Hirst and Pearl Reynolds (Bowthorpe) Thompson. She resided in Union and Baker City, before settling in La Grande. She attended Greenwood Elementary School and graduated from La Grande High School. She married Charles William Peck on June 14, 1939, in the LDS Salt Lake Temple.

She worked as secretary, bookkeeper and part-owner of the City Garbage Service and La Grande Land Fill. A very active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she loved serving in Relief Society, Young Women, and the Primary organizations, and as an ordinance worker in the LDS Boise Idaho Temple. In 1992, she was named Union County Volunteer of the Year from DHR Volunteer Program.

She was very artistic: she was a published poet, she wrote, composed lyrics and directed ward road shows for several years, and shared her beautiful alto voice as a member of the Church choir. Later in life, she took up oil painting and became an accomplished artist and member of the Union County Art Guild. She was also an avid quilt maker, designing and stitching intricate and whimsical designs for her children and grandchildren. She won numerous ribbons at the Union County Fair for her quilts, paintings, canning and jam.

She was active in the Greenwood Elementary School PTA, Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, Oregon Trail Days, and Indian Festival of the Arts. Classes from local schools came to visit the "Pioneer Cottage" she built on her property. Dressed as a pioneer, and using antiques and other artifacts she collected, Luana taught the children about history and early settlers.

Luana was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charlie Peck, her parents, James and Pearl Thompson, and four sisters, Nelma Pearl Thompson, Wilma B. Anderson, Mildred Ann Strong, and Afton H. Case.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law; Jim and Linda Peck of La Grande, and Dennis and Carolyn Peck of Dallas OR, and daughter and son-in-law, Tanja (Tami) and Kevin Crouch of Franklin TN; sisters, Athella King of Ocean Shores WA, and Della Hughes of West Valley City, UT; grandchildren, Dustin Peck, Stacy Norton, Heather Peck-Cocker, Jason Peck, Jeana Broyles, Kevin Peck and Cory Crouch; 15 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren
