Ellerton was educated at King William's College and graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge, England. He was a minister in the Church of England and was ordained circa 1851. He served six parishes.

He wrote and translated hymns, and edited several hymn books, including
Hymns for Schools and Bi­ble Class­es, 1859

Hymns, Orig­in­al and Trans­lat­ed, 1888

Ellerton was the son of George Ellerton (1776-1844) and Jemima Frances Brown (1795-1866). He married Charlotte Alicia Hart (1832-1896) in 1860.Anglican priest, hymn writer, and hymnologist. Ellerton wrote or translated more than 85 hymns, including "The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended".
