World War I Victoria Cross Scottish Recipient. He was the first Grenadier Guards officer to receive the Victoria Cross since the Crimean War. Captain George Henry Tatham, aged 22 years, was in the 4th Battalion with the Grenadier Guards, British Army. On December 1, 1917 at Gonnelieu, France he fearlessly exposed himself under enemy fire our separate times re-adjust the line, walking up and down within 50 yards of the enemy. He personally removed several wounded men, and was the last to leave the village. After the enemy had broken through on his left, he again mounted the parapet, and with a few men, forced the enemy once more to withdraw, thereby most likely saving the left flank. He was eventually mortally wounded. His Victoria Cross is displayed at the Guards Regimental Headquarters at Wellington Barracks, London, England.
