Vera Helderman Abernathy
Mrs. Abernathy, 93, of Charlotte, died March 10, 2006 at Presbyterian Hospital, Huntersville. She was a native of Lincoln County, NC and the daughter of the late William Henry and Mattie Keever Helderman. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Chapman Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn West Cemetery, Charlotte. Visitation is from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Chapman Memorial Baptist Church.
She was a homemaker, the oldest member of Chapman Memorial Baptist Church, member of the Quilters, member of the Ladies Bible Class and a former Sunday School Teacher. She was the 1929 Valedictorian of Rock Springs School.
Survivors include son, Gary Abernathy and wife, Pam of Charlotte; daughter, Mabel Moffat and husband Glenn of Charlotte; grandson, Bryan Abernathy; great-grandchildren, Lauren and Alex Abernathy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Lee Abernathy; sister, Della Bradshaw; brother, Russel Helderman and her parents.
Pallbearers are Mike Lee, Bobby Mashburn, Rick Elliott, Irwen Burns, Jr., Richard Smith and Larry Bradham. Rev. T. Allen Shuler will officiate. Memorials may be made to Chapman Memorial Baptist Church, 608 Valleydale Rd., Charlotte, NC 28214.
