Martin Ahlbrand

Martin JR. Ahlbrand, 85, of Columbus, died at noon Saturday, July 31, 2010, at Columbus Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Ahlbrand had been a member of First United Methodist Church since 1927. He also was a member of Columbus Saddle Club, National Carriage and Driving Association of America and was a charter member and the last living member of Bartholomew County Saddle Club.
Junior trained, raised and showed horses and ponies throughout the Midwest. He also handmade most of his show vehicles and equipment.
He retired from Arvin Industries in 1989 after 48 years of service and was a member of the company's Quarter Century Club.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Hathaway-Myers Chapel on Pearl Street with the Rev. Brian Campbell officiating. There will be no calling hours.

Born October 12, 1924, in Columbus, Mr. Ahlbrand was the son of Martin Henry and Mamie Roush Ahlbrand.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine; a daughter, Elaine Cheever of Winter Haven, FL; granddaughters, Lisa (Mike) Santana of West Palm Beach, FL, and Julie (Marshall) Cherry of Adylette, NC; a grandson, Gregory Cheever of Boynton Beach, FL; and brothers, John (Carol) Ahlbrand of Columbus and Ray (Ann) Ahlbrand of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary June Akin; and a brother, David Lee Ahlbrand.
