Bishop Joseph Rhodes Driver, 72, was found dead in the barn on his farm, Route 2, Waynesboro, at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Born June 17, 1884, in Augusta County, Bishop Driver was a son of late Joseph N. and Fannie Lorana Rhodes Driver.
A well-known farmer, he was a Bishop of the Springdale Mennonite Church. Bishop Driver attended Eastern Mennonite College, Harrisonburg, and served as a member of the board of directors of the college for a number of years. He taught a number of Mission Study Classes during the years.
Bishop Driver was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Weaver Driver, in February, 1932, and an infant son, Joseph R. Driver Jr.
Survivors include three sons, David H. Driver, Fred A. Driver and Ruel W. Driver, all of Route 2, Waynesboro; four daughters, Mrs. A. B. (Ruth) Burkholder, Mrs. Paul L. (Martha) Wenger, Mrs. Alva H. (Mary Frances) Showalter, and Mrs. Ornan L. (Naomi) Huber, all of Route 2, Waynesboro; one brother, Fred A. Driver, Waynesboro; one sister, Miss Mary Magdalene (Maggie) Driver, Route 2, Waynesboro; and 25 grandchildren.
Body will remain at the Etter Funeral Home and will be placed in the Springdale Mennonite Church at 1 p.m. Friday for viewing prior to the funeral service at 2:30 p.m. Service will be conducted by the Rev. John R. Mumaw, Harrisonburg, assisted by the Rev. Franklin Weaver, Waynesboro. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be sent in care of A. F. Weaver, Route 2, Waynesboro, to be sent to the American Bible Society.
Active pallbearers will be A. F. Burkholder, Junius Bridge, John D. Martin, P. E. Showalter, Roy Martin and Roy Kiser.
