Hans was aboard the DS Barøy, a Norwegian coastal liner. On September 12, 1941, the ship was on her way north from Bodø to Narvik when it was torpedoed by a British aircraft. The missile hit on the port side, sinking the ship in just two minutes. Only a handful of people were able to be rescued after the sinking. 112 lives were lost: 35 German soldiers, and 77 Norwegian civilians.

Hans was killed in the sinking.
