Alfred Rudolph Schmidt, 78, passed away October 25, 2012 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson. He was born January 23, 1934, to Alvin and Mary Isaak Schmidt in Little River Township, Reno County, KS. He received his education at Lily Dale School and graduated from Buhler High School in 1952. Upon confession of faith he was baptized and belonged to the Buhler Mennonite Church. He worked for Ediger Brothers Construction, Jayhawk Construction and 26 years for Dillons In-Store Services. He had served as a Buhler volunteer fireman, loved fishing, antique tractors especially Allis-Chalmers, and antique tractor pulling. He belonged to the Great Plains Tractor Club and sang with the Kansas Mennonite Men's Chorus. He did saw sharpening. He married Mary Mae Fast on October 15, 1955 at Mountain Lake, MN. They were married for 57 years and had one son Kenneth Duane. He is survived by his wife, Mary of Buhler, son Kenneth (Cindy) Schmidt of Hutchinson, 2 granddaughters, Jessica (Cory) Vaile and Misty Schmidt, 2 great grandsons, Christian and Conner Vaile, 1step grandson, Ryan (Chelsey) Penner of Hutchinson and 1 step great grandson, Aiden Penner, 1 sister, Rosa (Milton) Haugsness of Buhler and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister, Betty Epp, and 1 brother Orlando Schmidt. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m., with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, October 28, 2012 at Buhler Mortuary. Memorial Service will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 29, 2012 at Buhler Mennonite Church with Pastor Bob Dalke officiating. Memorials may be sent to either the Kansas Mennonite Men's Chorus or Great Plains Antique Tractor Club in care of Buhler Mortuary 120 N. Main, Buhler, KS.
