Saturday Funeral Set for Furniture Store Associate

Michael J. Whalen, 67, associated with the Dixie Wayside Furniture Co., Dixie Highway, since its opening a yar and a half ago, suffered a heart attack and died at his home today. He had been ill for several weeks.

He was born November 25, 1889 at Kansas City, Kansas and moved to Auglaize county from Evansville, Indiana in 1939. On June 1, 1913 he married Ethel Stewart who preceded him in death in 1931.

Surviving are a daughter Mrs. Paul (Marjorie) Ruese, Hamilton Road; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Whalen, Wapakoneta. A nephew, James Whalen, preceded him in death in April 1956 at Fresno, California. Also surviving are three grandchildren; two brothers, Patrick R. Whalen of Huntington, West Virginia and Edward P. Whalen of Chicago, Illinois.

He was a member of the Holy Name Society, BPOE 1179 and St. Joseph's Church.

In 1913 he entered the furniture manufacturing business. He had been with the Crane and McMahon Furniture Co., St. Mary's for 11 years and about 1 1/2 years ago opened the Dixie Wayside Furniture Co., Dixie highway.

Rev. Father Anthony Spitzig will officiate at Solemn Requiem High Mass at St. Joseph's church at 9:30 am Saturday. Burial will be at St. Joseph's cemetery.

Rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm Friday at the Siferd funeral home.

The family requests that memorials be given to St. Joseph Building Fund.

Friends may call at the Siferd funeral home after 7:00 pm Thursday.



Michael Whalen is the husband of Ethel M. Stewart and the father of two girls Marjorie and a daughter who died as an infant.

Mike is the grand father of 4 grandchildren.

He is the son of James H. Whalen and Mary Ann Dempsey and brother to Katie, Mary, Jane, James Jr.,John, Patrick Joseph, Edward Paul and William James.
