865 Private F Pilkington, 1st Battalion the (Duke of Wellington's) West Riding Regiment. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Orient on 30 Dec 1899, and arrived at the Cape on 21 Jan 1900. Along with the 2nd East Kent, 2nd Gloucesters, and 1st Oxford Light Infantry, they formed the 13th Brigade under Major General O E Knox. They joined the main army on the Modder River for the advance to Bloemfontein and were present at Klip Drift (16 Feb 1900) on the Modder River and at the battle of Paardeberg (18-27 Feb 1900). Private Pilkington died of disease at Bloemfontein on 29 May 1900. He is also commemorated on the (Duke of Wellington's) West Riding Regiment Boer War memorial in the Duke of Wellington's Regimental Chapel, York Minster, Deangate, York, North Yorkshire, England (see: https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/30553).
