Agnes Matilda Plumb/Plum and Joseph Alexander Laird were married on January 25, 1871, in Haysville, Wilmot Township, Ontario. The couple farmed in the township until about 1877, when they moved to New Hamburg.

Agnes and Joseph Laird were the parents of:
- Ruth Rebecca (1871-1901)
- Alexander Percy (b. July 10, 1873)
- John Kenneth (1877-1966)
- Lindsay Lloyd (b. April 29, 1892)

On September 1, 1893, Joseph and Agnes were appointed the positions of Keeper and Matron of the House of Industry & Refuge, a "poorhouse," located in Berlin (now Kitchener), which provided support to the needy.

Mr. Laird passed away on December 8, 1897 while working at the poorhouse. Sometime after daughter Ruth's death in October 1901, Agnes and son Lindsay moved to Toronto, where she died on April 20, 1934.

Mrs. Joseph Laird Dead.
A mesage was received by friends here announcing the death at Toronto on April 20th Mrs. Joseph Laird. Deceased was born in Haysville over 80 years ago, being a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Plum, Sr., and a brother of the late W. R. Plum Jr. Following her marriage to the late Joseph Laird they moved to New Hamburg where he conducted a flour and feed store in the premises now occupied by George Steiner. He was an ex-reeve of the village. They left here about 40 years ago after his appointment as superintendent of the Old Folks home in (Berlin) Kitchener, a position which he held at the time of his death.
The funeral was held at New Hamburg with interment in Riverside cemetery.
