Sandra Voncille "Sandy" Higgins Hadlock

Sandra "Sandy" Higgins Hadlock, age 79, passed away at her home in Orem, Utah, on October 13, 2022. She was born May 7, 1943, in Leavenworth, Kansas, to Lawrence and Thelma Higgins. She attended schools in Flushing, Michigan, and in 1961, graduated from Dye High School in Flint. During her school years, she was a member of the Bluebirds, part of the Campfire Girls program, and took dance and piano lessons. In high school, she played the clarinet and bass clarinet in the band. As a teenager, she enjoyed teaching the 11-year-old boys in the weekday Primary organization. Sandy received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1965 from Brigham Young University with an English major and French minor and received a teaching certificate. In college, she was in a bowling league and received the "Most Improved" trophy. She dated Andrew "Andy" Hadlock her freshman year at BYU and wrote him on his mission in Mississippi. They later married in the Salt Lake Temple on November 23, 1965. After graduation, she loved being a teacher and taught high school English at Ainsworth High School in Michigan, and also taught high school English and French at Pleasant Grove High School in Utah.
Sandy was the mother of six children, and grandmother to 22 grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. She often said it was a great adventure raising her children. Family was her most important priority and she thoroughly enjoyed being a mom and grandma. A skilled homemaker, she took pride in and loved her home, and enjoyed living in the same house since 1974. Dedicated to remembering family birthdays, she bought thoughtful birthday presents for her children and grandchildren right up until last month when her health declined. She loved road trips, camping, and boating, especially the annual Hadlock beach trip to Bear Lake. In earlier years, she enjoyed waterskiing and was known for never getting her hair wet. She and her husband traveled with their children around the country several times, visiting all the continental United States. While raising her family, she was devoted to having Family Home Evening and didn't miss a week since 1972. She helped prepare all six of her children to serve missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
A skilled seamstress, she made most of her children's clothes when they were young. She sewed her daughters' date dance dresses and altered her wedding dress so both her daughters could wear her wedding dress. She was both her daughters' 4-H leader and Debbie's Girl Scout leader. In earlier years, some of her hobbies were knitting mittens and sweaters and crocheting ornaments and baby booties. She enjoyed flower gardening, with a special love for pink flowers and roses. A voracious reader, Sandy was always learning and logged over 2,400 books on Goodreads. She was a talented cook and hosted Sunday dinners for nearly three decades. She loved having the family gather and never complained about the grandkids' messes. Sandy was a great dancer and especially enjoyed swing dancing with her husband all through her life. As a teenager, she was invited to dance on the Detroit version of American Bandstand. Recently, she discovered Duolingo and became more proficient in French. On vacations with her husband, Andy, she enjoyed snorkeling and 4-wheeling. Sandy also loved Sudoku, word puzzles, crime TV shows, and playing the piano.
As a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sandy magnified the callings she was given. Always organized, Sandy kept track of every church calling she ever had, which included: stake and ward Relief Society presidents, RS counselors, secretary, and teacher; Young Women president, counselor, secretary, and teacher; Primary counselor, teacher, activity day leader, Cub Scout and Boy Scout leaders.
Sandy is survived by her husband, Andrew Hadlock, of Orem, Utah, and her children: daughter Debbie (Ben) Stahmann of North Logan, Utah, son Dave (Darcy) Hadlock of Eagle Mountain, Utah, daughter Kathy (David) Knudsen of Spanish Fork, Utah, son Steve Hadlock of Saratoga Springs, Utah, son Brian Hadlock of Orem, Utah, and son Scott (Alyssa) Hadlock of Orem, Utah, and 22 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. She is also survived by one brother, Monte (Sadie) Higgins of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, and one sister, Brenda Tippets of Palmer, Alaska. Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Thelma Higgins.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at the Orem Timpview 2nd Ward Chapel, 865 West 1000 North, Orem, Utah. Viewings for family and friends will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, October 21, 2022, at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street, Orem, Utah, and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday, at the church prior to the services. Burial will be in the Orem City Cemetery.
