Born in the San Joaquin Valley of California, her formative years were marked by the Great Depression and the loss of her eldest brother Paul, who was killed in the Second World War. A gifted student, after attending Merritt College in Oakland and Willis Business College in Santa Monica she was a legal secretary for the law firm of Fogel & McInerny in Santa Monica, the beachfront city where she met Ed Streip. They married at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Santa Barbara in 1952 and raised their family in the Westchester neighborhood of Los Angeles. Strongly devoted to her four children and two grandchildren, and dedicated to a healthy lifestyle that avoided extravagance, she lived long enough to enjoy meeting her great-grandson Luke, who was born three months before her death at age 95.
