Born Richard Clark Ellsworth he was an amateur free agent starting pitcher that played for the Chicago Cubs (1958, 1960–1966), Philadelphia Phillies (1967), Boston Red Sox (1968–1969), Cleveland Indians (1969–1970), and Milwaukee Brewers (1970–1971). He began his debut on June 22, 1958 and played his last Major League Baseball game on June 23, 1971. His most productive season was in 1963 with the Cubs, when he won 22 games. He play in the 1964 All-Star game. In his 13 year career, he played in 407 games and posted a win-loss record of 115–137, with 1,140 strikeouts, and a 3.72 ERA, in 2,155.2 innings. He was inducted into the Fresno County Athletic Hall of Fame.
