He grew up in Ashland, Kentucky, son of the late Rev. Charles and Maggie May.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carmella Cotrone May, four brothers and two sisters.
An Army veteran, he and Carmella married in 1961. They raised three children in Sweetser, Indiana. In Marion, Indiana, he managed factories for GM, Active Products and Fisher Industries and owned several gas stations.
Charlie believed in the Lord Jesus Christ as his savior and was active in Nelson Street Wesleyan, Sunnycrest Baptist and Lakeview Wesleyan churches.
He played baseball and softball most of his life on city and church teams. His gas stations sponsored many teams in various leagues.
He and Carmella moved to Mooresville, North Carolina, in 1990 for his job with Fisher Industries. He later worked at Duckworth's convenience store.
Charlie was a jigsaw puzzle master and enjoyed reading and listening to gospel music. He loved University of Kentucky basketball and the Cincinnati Reds.
He was always positive, never knew a stranger and made friends wherever he went. He was a daily customer at Duckworth's and Golden Corral in his later years and considered the staff family.
Charlie spent his last 10 months at Atria Lake Norman senior living facility in Mooresville, where he came to know and love his fellow residents and his caregivers.
Survivors include his children, Christina May (Linda Coutant) of Boone, Cathy May of Mooresville, Chuck May (Becky) of Spring Lake, Michigan; grandchildren Alexa Keck (Seth) of Kokomo, Indiana, and Emily May and Jacob May of Spring Lake, Michigan; several dear brothers- and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, at 5 p.m. with visitation beginning at 4 p.m. at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home in Mooresville.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Gordon Hospice House, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625.
