Actress, Activist. She was best known for declining Marlon Brando's Oscar for "The Godfather" on his behalf at the 1973 Academy Awards. Born in Salinas, California, she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s and first, began modeling before attending California State University, Hayward to study dramatics and speech. She participated in the Native American occupation of Alcatraz Island in 1970, but did not live there while she was going to school. She gained notoriety when she declined Marlon Brando's Best Actor Academy Award, on his behalf, at the 1973 Academy Award ceremonies. She received both commendations and protests toward her actions at the ceremonies. She also appeared in several films during the 1970s, including "The Trial of Billy Jack," (1974) "Freebie and the Bean," (1974) and "Johnny Firecloud" (1975). She continued appearing on the theatrical stage once her film roles dwindled in the mid 1970s. She also continued her activism in the Native American movement for the rest of her life. In 2022, she received a formal apology from the Academy about how she was treated 50 years before.
